Summer will be over before we know it! As we scramble to squeeze in one more beach trip, we find ourselves both excited about the new year and wondering how to keep the best of summer's pace in our busy lives. What we need is sabbath. Sabbath in the Suburbs is a book by a young clergy woman, with young children, about her family's experiment with adapting the Jewish custom of Sabbath to Christian family life. Spoiler: alert: it changed everything! Pick up a copy at church, or order it on Kindle, and come to Day's porch to discuss it on Sunday, August 24 at 6:30pm. Come even if you haven't finished the book!
Tomorrow (Thursday) is Ascension Day - the end of the time that the resurrected Jesus walked and talked on earth with his human friends. Here's a great video that talks about Jesus' new role as intercessor for us - always with God, always with us. Wow. You may chooses to talk to your child(ten) about how Jesus is always with us and hears our prayers. Talk about things you believe but can't see. Most of all, talk about how the Ascension goes with the Crucifixion and Resurrection. It is part of how everything changed. Please share your thoughts, or those of your family!
What a blessing to celebrate Easter together! It was a day filled with joy and love. And now the celebration continues! It is our "job" to continue celebrating Easter all the way until Pentecost (June 8). A few suggestions:
Watch this amazing video about a three-year-old donating her hair for a wig for a cancer patient. Our focus for our Mite Box giving this week is education. Can your children imagine being in a place where they wanted to go to school, but couldn't? Does Emily's story make it easier to recognize our abundance, and to give generously to others? Please share your child(ten)'s reactions to the video.
Thank you, Deacon Sarah, for bringing your friend Deacon Jean to the Family Service on Sunday. He really helped us imagine what life is like in Haiti. Thank you for asking us to remember the children of Haiti in our prayers and by putting coins into our mite boxes. And thank especially for teaching us "We Are Marching" in Creole! Here are the words:
Nape mache, nan limye Bondye, Nape mache nan limye Bondye. Nape mache, nan limye Bondye, Nape mache nan limye Bondye. Nape mache, nape mache whooooo! Nape mache nan limye Bondye! Nape mache, nape mache whooooo! Nape mache nan limye Bondye! And phonetically: na-PAY mah-chay, nan lim-YAY Bon-DJAY Please post what your family enjoyed most about our guest. Many thanks to all who worshipped with us yesterday for Ash Wednesday. If you couldn't be at St. Andrew's, we missed you. Ready or not, the 40 days are here. What do hope for yourself, and for your family, this season? The resources listed elsewhere on this site are intended to help you grow closer to God by being better Bible readers, better prayers and better helpers of others. Have a blessed Lent. At Sunday FISHing, we talked about when we feel closest to God. Where we are, who we're with, what we're doing. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5, and is a time for doing things, on purpose, that will bring us closer to God. As a parish family, we will be try to be closer to God by reading the Bible, saying our prayers, and helping others. |
