Happy Halloween!I'm sure the excitement is reaching manic proportions in your homes. You might remind your child(ren) that, no matter what we "dress up" as in life, we are still the same wonderful person inside: known and loved by God. And even if we aren't afraid of the dark, a little bit of light brings us joy. Isn't that why pumpkins are so much fun? Please post here what your child(ren) are dressing u
Isabel said she would have looked for a more sympathetic judge rather than going to the mean judge. Spoken like the daughter of an attorney! I believe that, if Isabel were representing the persistent widow, she would have found a more sympathetic judge. Ask your family if anything from the Gospel story reminds them of Jacob wrestling with God (Jacob, too, went the distance).
The problems facing our sisters and brothers in Haiti overwhelm us, and are enough to make us demand an explanation from God. But remember, Libby told us that the church is making a difference in Haiti. And Janie said that when we help others it is like we're helping God help them. We have the chance to represent Haiti to the world. And on Sunday, at the Outreach Carnival, we can give as generously as we're able and celebrate that we can help. At the Outreach Carnival on October 27, we will be giving money to support the school lunch program in Haiti. It can be hard to talk about money with your child(ren): hard to relate earnings to education and labor, hard to explain the choices you make about expenses, and hard to offer alternatives to our materialistic culture. Do you give your child(ren) an allowance? Is it based on chores or other responsibilities? Does it come with the expectation that some of it will be shared with others? Left: Haitian children enjoy seeing their image on the camera of an Episcopal missionary, January '13. Our children amaze us - that's no secret. I remember the first time my oldest swam on her own. Sure, I had taught her, and I was standing there next to her in the pool. But there was no way I could claim credit for what that amazing person was doing on her own. God's grace is like that. We show up and live faithfully, but what God does is amazing, and seemingly impossible. How have your children amazed you this week
You were all in my thoughts and prayers as I walked in the Alzheimer's walk in SC this past weekend. My childhood friend, who has always lived there, walked with me. She was amazed that she knew no one there; I continue to wonder how the under-resourced can cope with this disease. Have you noticed anyone outside of your normal circles this week? Could they be Lazarus, nearly invisible, yet desperately in need? |
