Tomorrow is Earth Day. Many of us will be part of special activities at work or school to observe this day and to raise awareness of the need for environmental conservation.
Earth Day is not specifically a Christian holiday - many people who celebrate it aren't Christian or follow any religion at all. But for Christians, it is an opportunity to thank God for the wonders of creation and remind ourselves that we are doing God's work when we take care of creation.

On Sunday, we read "Big Momma Makes the World," by Phyllis Root. It is a fun and fanciful story of Creation, where the Creator has a baby on her hip and a big pile of laundry to do, yet still finds time to make the world. At the end of each day, she looks at what she has made and says, "That's good. That's real good." Finally, when she is ready to take a day off and rest, she says to all the people, "This is a real nice world we got here, and you all better take some good care of it." |
We take some good care of the little piece of earth in Arlington that God has given us. Watch this video, as Priscilla Carey explains how our garden was started. Volunteering in the St. Andrew's garden and orchard is something all ages may do together, and is a great activity for families to talk about both taking care of God's creation and feeding the hungry. | |
So, also on Sunday, we "took us some good care" of the garden and orchard:
What will you do to celebrate Earth Day tomorrow? Some suggestions:
Post your plans here!
- Talk, with your family, about a time you have felt close to God in the outdoors,
- Walk, with your family, and look for signs of new life in nature,
- Balk, with your family, at using electronics for one day,
- Look up, with your family, information about plants that are native to our area, and why it is good to include them in your garden.
